In and around the city: a lot to discover
Luxembourg is a small country, but it offers a wide variety of activities within a reasonable distance from the city centre. In the capital, you can easily wander from the medieval walls in the Grund and Clausen to the dynamic environment of the Kirchberg plateau, where the EIB’s buildings are located.
You can discover the most beautiful natural spots in Luxembourg on foot or by bike. A short drive from the city will take you to the Müllerthal Region – “Little Switzerland” – where you will find 100 km of trails to walk or cycle along in the middle of woods and around interesting rock formations and ancient castles.
If you prefer to explore further afield, Lorraine and Alsace are just across the French border with their “Routes du Vin” and historical heritage. The oldest city in Germany, Trier, and the Belgian Ardennes are also perfect destinations for one-day excursions.
You can also take a flight from the easily accessible Luxembourg Findel Airport and explore the continent: most of the main European cities can be reached within two hours or are directly connected.
Climate: Luxembourg’s green ambitions
The EIB’s climate ambitions are aligned with those of our host country. In fact, a collaboration between the government and the Bank – the LU-EIB Climate Finance Platform – aims to finance innovative high-impact investment projects in the fight against climate change and increase the leverage effect on private sector investments by mitigating the financial risks of private investment partners. On the ground, the country’s climate ambitions are very visible.
Luxembourg City has adopted a modern approach to waste management as part of its environmental action plan and has put in place a set of measures aimed at reducing energy consumption (particularly of fossil fuels) and climate impacts. Since 1 March 2020, public transport in Luxembourg is free throughout the country and for all modes of transport - trams, trains and buses. This, along with Luxembourg’s growing network of cycle paths, provides the perfect opportunity for staff to embrace the EIB’s commitment to climate and leave their cars at home!
Cultural life: a mix of sophistication and style
Steeped in culture and history, the city and country have a variety of cinemas, theatres and music venues (the Philharmonie with classical and contemporary music, Den Atelier where international rock bands come to play), as well as a wide range of shops and pubs where the international community gathers for after-work drinks and during weekends.
You can always find interesting events at the Rotondes, Rockhal and LuxExpo and plenty of occasions to spend your nights partying in Luxembourg’s old town, Clausen and the Grund – three areas full of bars and clubs.

Luxembourg is a perfect place to raise a family. Luxembourg offers a wide variety of both private and public schooling options: the European School, which is free of charge for EIB children aged 4 to 18; the International School of Luxembourg, St. George’s International School, Lycée Vauban and the local schools, where children are taught in three languages (Luxembourgish, French and German). There are also a few public international schools offering classes in English.
For your grown-up children, Luxembourg has a university with three faculties (Science, Technology and Communication; Law, Economics and Finance; Language and Literature, Humanities, Arts and Education) and over 6 200 international students.
This safe country is full of surprises for children of all ages – from museums offering regular activities for kids, like MUDAMINI; or concerts for children at the Philharmonie; to sports activities and natural parks full of animals, such as the Escher Déierepark – your children will discover an environment full of activities where they can grow up in peace.
